defra (eu) update: ID for equidae

of particular interest to breeders will be the eu debate that took place this week  (commencing 02/03/08) in Brussels on regulating ID for equidae.

Member States voted in favour of the introduction of the Regulation which on current understanding sets an implementation date of 1st July 2009.   Foals     born after that date will have six months from birth to be passported  and be  fitted with a microchip. This will not apply retrospectively to older horses.

EASTERN APPALOOSA & OPEN SHOW, Grange Farm Equestrian Centre, Wittering, Cambridgeshire

Sunday, 8th July, 2007

Rasmus af Hallundbaek waits to go into the ridden class

The UKA sponsored a ring and classes for the Knabstrupper at the Eastern Appaloosa and Open Show which turned out to be a really enjoyable day with the sun shining (a novelty this Summer!) and good representation for the breed.  This is the first time that there have been dedicated Knabstrupper classes at an Open event in the UK and thanks to Sandra O'Gorman and her team for all the hard work involved in organising it.  Thanks also to Ellen Bendtsen for coming all the way from Denmark to judge the horses for us.  We hope this is the first of many.

Strangles Awareness

Strangles is a highly infectious disease caused by Streptococcus equi and in some cases can prove fatal.

Symptoms can include fever, depression, loss of appetite and swollen lymph nodes which can form abscesses causing the horse to have difficulty breathing and swallowing.  The abscesses can then rupture changing clear discharge to coloured (puss) and in some cases can also spread to other parts of the body which brings on an even more serious and often fatal form of the disease.

The British Horse Society and Intervet have launched an awareness campaign to show how good stable hygiene and management can help to keep this disease under control.

Strangles awareness is being promoted by - the BHS & Intervet and the Strangles Web Site can be found at www.equine-strangles.co.uk and they have set up a Strangles Helpline on: 01908 685685
