| | | Strangles Awareness | | | Strangles is a highly infectious disease caused by Streptococcus equi and in some cases can prove fatal. Symptoms can include fever, depression, loss of appetite and swollen lymph nodes which can form abscesses causing the horse to have difficulty breathing and swallowing. The abscesses can then rupture changing clear discharge to coloured (puss) and in some cases can also spread to other parts of the body which brings on an even more serious and often fatal form of the disease. The British Horse Society and Intervet have launched an awareness campaign to show how good stable hygiene and management can help to keep this disease under control. Strangles awareness is being promoted by - the BHS & Intervet and the Strangles Web Site can be found at www.equine-strangles.co.uk and they have set up a Strangles Helpline on: 01908 685685 |
